Scoil Naomh Mhuire was awarded the Active School Flag in June 2019 and we renewed our Active School Flag in June 2024.
The Active School Flag was launched by the Department of Education in 2009. It is an initiative which seeks to recognise schools (both primary and post-primary) that strive to achieve a physically active and physically educated school community.
The initiative encourages schools to commit to a process of self-evaluation in terms of the PE programmes and physical opportunities that they offer. It also encourages the planning and implementing of a series of changes that will enhance PE and extracurricular provision and promote physical activity.
Day 1 of Active School Week 2025
Day 1 of Active Schools Week was a fantastic adventure to the Barnagh Greenway, celebrating Bike Week! We were thrilled to offer all pupils the chance to cycle, with bike rentals generously funded by Limerick City and County Council. Our senior pupils showed incredible stamina, cycling beyond Abbeyfeale, while some of our junior pupils impressively made it past Barnagh Greenway. Everyone was amazed by the distances they covered!
The day was packed with fun and learning. Children enjoyed playing in the park, had a lovely picnic outdoors, and listened to an important safety talk facilitated by Locomotion Bike Hire. It was truly an enjoyable day for all.
Day 2 of Active School Week 2025
Day 2 of Active Schools was a huge success, thanks to Mark from Limerick GAA! The sun was shining as Mark put the children through their paces, teaching them some fantastic football skills and games. There was a wonderful buzz around the school, and it was clear to see how much the children thoroughly enjoyed the session. A massive "Mile buiochas" to Mark for a brilliant day!
Day 3 of Active School Week 2025
Day three of Active Schools was a huge success, thanks to the incredible efforts of our student council! They brilliantly organised an obstacle course for the children, and it was fantastic to witness how enthusiastically everyone engaged with it. Seeing the children take such ownership of their learning and experiences is truly inspiring and makes all the hard work worthwhile.
Day 4 of Active School Week 2025
Day 4 was a delightful one, with the children enjoying various games on the sun-drenched grass. Everyone had a wonderful time.
Day 5 of Active School Week 2025
Active Schools Week ended with exciting relay races. Kids ran fast and worked together in teams. Everyone cheered, and it was a fun way to finish a great week of sports and games.
#RelaysTakeOver Initiative
We're thrilled to share that our school participated in the #RelaysTakeOver initiative during European Sports Week 2024! Our talented pupils joined in the fun and excitement of this event, showcasing their athleticism and teamwork. Our students gave it their all, demonstrating dedication, sportsmanship, and a love for physical activity.
