Introducing our 2025-2026 Student Council
The Student Council at Scoil Naomh Mhuire Ballyhahill is the vital link between pupils, staff, and management. Council members gather suggestions from their classmates, which are then discussed and prioritised in meetings. The most important ideas are brought forward to the teachers and the Board of Management, ensuring students are active participants in school decisions. Past councils have contributed to many positive changes, from new playground equipment to school policies. By empowering pupils to take on leadership roles and work together, the Student Council reminds us that every student's opinion matters, making our school a better place for everyone.
Student Council in Action: Highlights from Our Second Meeting
Our Student Council held its second highly productive meeting recently! The children did a fantastic job leading the discussion, covering everything from academic subjects to exciting upcoming events.
Our main focus was a comprehensive review of Maths in our school. The council members shared excellent insights into their lessons:
What they enjoy: They highlighted a love for practical activities, using real-life examples to solve problems, and engaging in maths games and challenges. They also feel that working with manipulatives (like blocks or counters) makes the concepts much easier to grasp.
Helpful Tips: The pupils identified that clear, step-by-step instructions and opportunities to work in smaller groups can make more difficult topics much easier to do. This valuable feedback will be shared with the teaching staff to help enhance our approach to maths across the school.
The council also looked ahead to some exciting activities in the coming weeks:
Creative Schools Update
The children shared their enthusiasm for Creative Thursday, where they enjoy focused time on presenting their project on the monthly theme.
We discussed the upcoming visit from our Creative Schools advisor, Fiona Linnane, on Wednesday. Fiona is a well-known composer and Creative Associate, and we look forward to her insight as we continue to develop our school's creative potential.
Upcoming Fun & Fundraising
Soccer Sessions: We discussed the upcoming soccer sessions, and the children are looking forward to participating! More details regarding dates and times will be communicated soon.
Re-turn Scheme Fundraiser: The council were enthusiastic about our new pupil-led initiative using the Re-turn Scheme. This green fundraiser encourages pupils and families to bring in empty plastic bottles and cans marked with the Re-turn logo to raise funds while promoting environmental awareness. Get ready to start saving those containers!
Hallowe'en Celebrations
The end of the week promises plenty of spooky fun!
We confirmed the Hallowe'en Dress-Up Day on Thursday, and the students are already planning their creative costumes.
We also gave a huge shout-out to our wonderful Parents Association for organising the annual Hallowe'en Disco—always a highlight on the school calendar!
Thank you to all our Student Council members for their hard work and great ideas! We'll be updating you again after our next meeting.
Our newly elected Student Council has hit the ground running! The members gathered for their first meeting of the year, bringing a fantastic list of ideas and suggestions from their classmates. It was a very productive session with a focus on improving school life for everyone.
Among the key topics discussed were the Beginning of Year School Mass, the Healthy Eating Policy, an update on Hot Meals. The council also reviewed the success of our Re-turn Scheme fundraiser and began planning for the upcoming Football League. A significant part of the meeting was dedicated to our school's values, as the council discussed the Bí Cineálta Policy.
Finally, the members were excited to start planning a pupil-led crafts project, which promises to be a creative and fun initiative for the whole school. We're looking forward to an exciting year of collaboration with our Student Council!
