We were fortunate to have secured a place in The National Council for Special Education (NCSE) innovative new pilot project commencing in the 2024/25 academic year to enrich Universal Design for Learning in schools.
Unniversal Design for Learning (UDL) is a framework to improve and optimise teaching and learning for all students by offering choice and variability. The UDL framework supports teachers to plan for learner variability, reduce barriers and support resourceful purposeful and goal orientated students.
The UDL framework is built upon three core principles:
Engagement: This principle focuses on motivating students and sustaining their interest in learning. Educators are encouraged to provide multiple options for engagement that cater to students’ interests, emotional capacities, and identities.
Representation: This principle emphasises the need to present information in various formats. By offering content through text, audio, video, and hands-on activities, educators can ensure that all students have access to the material in a way that aligns with their individual learning strengths.
Action & Expression: This principle allows students multiple ways to demonstrate what they have learned. Options may include traditional assessments like tests or alternative methods such as presentations or creative projects. This flexibility helps accommodate different learning styles and preferences.
Universal Design for Learning represents a transformative approach to education that recognises the variability among learners. By embracing its principles—engagement, representation, and action & expression—educators can create inclusive classrooms where every student has the opportunity to succeed.
Pupil Creativity Blossoms on Creative Thursday!
Our "Creative Thursday" UDL project blossomed beautifully with the theme of "New Beginnings" and "Summer Flowers," marking a truly vibrant end to the school year! The pupils explored their learning in wonderfully diverse ways, showcasing their creativity through stunning digital images, engaging project work, and even by bringing in beautiful flowers from their nanas' gardens. One particularly touching display was a collaborative flower arrangement created with a nana – a true testament to intergenerational learning and shared joy. We were so impressed by the children's imaginative interpretations and can't wait to see their creativity flourish even further next year!
UDL Showcase Day in Portlaois
Ms. Griffin had the pleasure of attending the UDL Showcase in Portlaoise on the 7th of May, where samples of our pupils’ fantastic Creative Thursday projects were proudly displayed.
This event highlighted just one of our “plus one” initiatives during the school year, celebrating creativity, inclusion, and student voice. Our pupils worked hard on a wide range of topics, including global warming, Irish traditions, and local geography — all presented in imaginative and meaningful ways.
Well done to everyone involved for representing our school with such enthusiasm and creativity.
Exploring Our World and Beyond: April's Creative Thursday Delights
Our young learners showcased a fantastic array of creative projects this Creative Thursday in April, demonstrating remarkable ingenuity and a passion for learning! While the exciting project of crafting bird nests and feeders is anticipated in the coming weeks – with insightful instructions shared by the children themselves – this month's presentations were equally inspiring. We were treated to thoughtful explorations of our planet and its endangered inhabitants, captivating glimpses into backyard life, the fascinating world of snakes and wild cats, and important reflections on Earth Day and how we can better care for our environment. Artistic talents blossomed in striking before-and-after drawings of the world, and imaginative 3D paintings of the globe came to life through resourceful use of household materials. The recent field trip to the beach also sparked creativity, evident in the diverse projects inspired by their coastal adventures. The level of creativity displayed this month was truly outstanding, leaving us all thoroughly impressed by the children's engagement and imaginative expression.
March Creative Thursday
Creative Thursdays in March blossomed with vibrant interpretations of "My Ireland: Past, Present, and Future." Our pupils embarked on deeply personal journeys, exploring our rich heritage and envisioning Ireland yet to come. With the principles of Universal Design for Learning (UDL) guiding their exploration, each child was empowered to engage with the theme in a way that resonated with their unique strengths and passions. The resulting projects were a testament to their creativity and thoughtful engagement, showcasing a diverse range of mediums and perspectives, from historical narratives and artistic expressions to futuristic inventions and digital projects. The school was filled with a palpable sense of pride as we witnessed the children's remarkable ability to connect with and express their understanding of this captivating theme.
February Creative Thursday
During the second month of our UDL project, the children had the freedom to explore and respond to the theme "Make Your Mark." It was wonderful to see their individuality shine through as they expressed their ideas in unique and creative ways. From artwork and lego to innovative projects, their enthusiasm and imagination were truly inspiring. Well done to all the children for their fantastic efforts and for embracing the challenge with such creativity and confidence!
January Creative Thursday
We're excited to share these photos and videos from our latest Creative Thursday project, a key part of our participation in the Universal Design for Learning (UDL) pilot program. UDL is all about creating inclusive classrooms where every student can thrive. This month, the theme was 'The Chinese New Year' and we focused on 'Multiple Means of Action and Expression,' giving students the freedom to choose how they demonstrate their learning. The results are incredible! You'll see a variety of projects, from traditional projects to innovative multimedia presentations and hands-on activities. This approach allows students to tap into their strengths and develop their unique talents. A big thank you to our students, teachers, and families for making this initiative so successful!
