Green Schools is an environmental education programme that promotes sustainable practices in schools. It is a student led programme with involvement from the wider community. Green-Schools’ mission is to protect planet Earth – our shared home to which we all belong.
Scoil Naomh Mhuire is dedicated to promoting the Green Schools programme run by An Taisce. So far we have been awarded 5 Green Flags:
Litter and Waste
Energy
Water

Biodiversity
By participating in the Green Schools Initiative, the pupils not only contribute positively to their immediate environment but also instil lifelong values of sustainability in students. This initiative fosters a culture of respect for nature and encourages proactive engagement with global environmental challenges.
Over the next two years we are aiming to achieve our 6th Green Flag- Global Citizenship (Litter and Waste).
Sowing Seeds for the Future: 1st & 2nd Class Get Green Fingers!
There was great excitement in the air this afternoon as our 1st and 2nd Class students rolled up their sleeves to take part in a very special gardening project. As part of the Biodiversity in Schools programme, the children were tasked with planting native tree seeds, helping to teach them about the lifecycle of plants and the importance of caring for our environment.
It was wonderful to see the children engaging with nature, getting their hands a little dirty, and learning how a tiny seed can eventually grow into a mighty tree. This fantastic initiative was made possible thanks to the sponsorship of FDC, and we are grateful for their support in bringing biodiversity into our classroom.
A massive note of gratitude goes to Ms. Dunworth and our wonderful SNA Caroline. Their guidance, patience, and support ensured every child had a turn and understood the magic of planting. We can’t wait to watch these seeds—and our students' knowledge—grow over the coming months!
Biodiversity Webinar
Our junior pupils took part in an engaging Biodiversity Webinar today as part of the Biodiversity in Schools Programme. The children learned all about the plants, animals and habitats that make up our local environment, and they were full of curiosity and great questions throughout the session.
As part of the programme, we also received some lovely outdoor trail cards, which the children are looking forward to using during nature walks and outdoor learning activities.
It was a wonderful opportunity to deepen their understanding of the world around them and to inspire a love of nature and environmental care from an early age.
Well done to all the pupils for their enthusiasm and participation!
